A transcription service is basically converting live or recorded speeches or conversations of professionals into written or electronic text document. The most common form of transcription is that of a spoken-language into text. The origin of idea of using transcription services dates back to 1960s, the first transcription service was used in Manufacturing Resource Planning, in 1975. The technology used then was completely different from the one we use now, transcription equipment has changed from manual typewriters to electric typewriters to word processors to computers and from plastic disks and magnetic belts to cassettes and endless loops and digital recordings.

In simple words medical transcription is converting the dictations and reports of physicians and other medical professionals relating to patient’s workup, assessment, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis etc to accurately record and document them. The next time the patient visits the doctor, the doctor refers to previous records or the patient’s entire chart, which will contain all reports from previous encounters. The doctor can on occasion refill the patient’s prescriptions after seeing only the medical record, although doctors prefer to not refill prescriptions without seeing the patient to establish if anything has changed. Many hospitals outsource transcription work to professional companies for more reliable and accurate results. The exhaustive oral reports are stored in a compressed form and sent to the transcription service provider. The medical transcriptionist then decompresses the records and minutely examines every minute, ensuring that it is completely free from any technical or human error. This report is then resent to the same hospital/doctor. Although many physicians and hospitals do maintain paper records, there is a drive for electronic records. As a career option a transcriptionist’s job is a rewarding one, because medical industry is completely recession free. So as a medical transcriptionist you will get work throughout the year and demand for all your services will never decline. Medical transcription provides unlimited intellectual challenge and opportunity to make an important contribution to a patient’s treatment. Medical transcriptionists occupy a very important place in healthcare industry by transcribing dictated medical reports of every patient’s medical care and condition. As medical transcription is transcribing a part of patient’s life, the medical transcriptionist should have extensive knowledge of medical terminology including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, human diseases, as also surgical procedures, diagnostic tests and laboratory tests to make an accurate and permanent medical report or record.
